PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
In essence, there exist three major areas of intervention. These are dietary and nutrition, physical activities, and social changes of behavior. Each of these is important in establishing long term healthy habits that prevent childhood obesity. In all cases, it has been shown to be most advantageous and cost effective to target the parents for purposes of treatment interventions. While many past therapies focused on the child, interventions that are most successful change the parent’s patterns of eating and behavior. What has also been of interest is that parents’ motivation is not weight loss but more qualitative measures such as self-esteem of their child and a better quality of life. These aspects actually predict better compliance with a treatment program.
